What's been happening in UAE tech and business this week?

Okay so I’ve been down a bit of a rabbit hole this week reading about what’s going on in the Emirates business and tech space, and honestly there’s quite a lot bubbling under the surface right now. Thought I’d share what caught my attention — curious if others have noticed the same things.

Here’s what’s been on my radar:

  • AI adoption in the region keeps accelerating — feels like every week there’s another announcement about a government or corporate initiative pushing AI into public services or operations. The pace here really is different from anywhere else I’ve lived.
  • Freelance and remote work visas are still a hot topic — I keep seeing people in expat groups asking about the digital nomad/remote work visa options. Demand for flexibility seems to be growing fast, especially among people who want to be based in Dubai but work for companies abroad.
  • The e-invoicing rollout — if you run any kind of business here, this is one to watch. The transition timelines are real and I’ve heard from a few people who are only just realising they need to act.
  • Co-working spaces are quietly booming — especially in areas like JLT and Business Bay. Seems like solo founders and small teams are increasingly choosing flexibility over traditional office leases.

It’s a lot to keep up with, honestly. I find the business environment here genuinely exciting but also quite fast-moving — blink and something’s changed.

What’s caught your eye this week? Any trends you’re watching or news that affected you directly? Always love hearing what people on the ground are actually experiencing. :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Really good summary, and yeah the pace here is genuinely something else compared to most markets.

The e-invoicing one is probably the most urgent for anyone running a business. The Federal Tax Authority has been rolling out the framework and timelines are not optional, so worth checking tax.gov.ae directly if you haven’t already. A few people I know got caught off guard thinking it was still “coming soon.”

On freelance visas, the UAE remote work visa is real and worth looking at via u.ae for the official requirements. Costs and eligibility vary depending on which emirate you go through.

The co-working boom tracks with what I’m seeing too. JLT especially feels like it’s shifted quite a bit in the last year, lots of smaller operators filling in around the bigger names.

The AI stuff is fascinating but honestly hard to keep up with even if you’re actively trying.

Which of these is most relevant to you right now, the business side or the visa flexibility angle?
