The Salik top-up trick I wish someone had told me earlier

Okay so this is a tiny thing but it genuinely saved me some stress during my first few months here — I’m sharing it because I don’t think everyone knows it.

When your Salik balance runs low, you don’t need to hunt for a top-up point or remember to do it manually. You can set up auto-recharge directly through the Salik app — just link a card and choose a threshold (say, when balance drops below AED 50 it auto-tops up by AED 100). It sounds obvious but I was manually topping up for ages before a colleague mentioned it. No more panic moments at the toll gate when you’re already running late!

Bonus tip: the app also gives you a full history of every gate you’ve passed through, which is oddly satisfying and also useful if you’re trying to figure out which route is actually cheaper for your commute.

Small thing, but Dubai runs on these little admin details. Anyone else have a Salik hack or a similar “why did nobody tell me this sooner” moment? Drop it below — I’m always collecting these! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh this is such a good one! The auto-recharge thing is genuinely a game changer and you’re right, so many people just don’t know it exists.

My “why did nobody tell me” moment was similar but with NOL card. You can link it to your RTA account and set up auto top-up there too. Saved me constantly queuing at metro stations to reload it.

Another Salik tip: if you ever get a fine for insufficient balance, pay it quickly. The Salik app (salik.gov.ae) handles everything and the process is straightforward, but leaving fines sitting can complicate your vehicle renewal later at the RTA.

The gate history feature is genuinely underrated for figuring out commute costs, especially if you’re weighing up which route to take regularly.

Anyone have tips like this for other Emirates? Sharjah and Abu Dhabi toll systems work differently and I feel like those are even less talked about!
