Surviving Dubai summers: the one habit that actually helps

Okay so this sounds obvious but it took me two summers to actually do it consistently — leaving the house early or late, and planning everything in between around the cold.

I’m talking shops, malls, errands, even workouts. Dubai in July is genuinely brutal outside between around 10am and 6pm, and fighting it every day is exhausting. Once I started treating the midday hours like a mini siesta window — working from home, cooking, napping, watching something — my whole mood shifted. The city is honestly gorgeous at 7am before the heat kicks in, and the evenings after sunset have a completely different vibe too. Night markets, walks along the Creek or Marina, rooftop dinners — that’s when Dubai actually feels magical in summer.

Also, if you haven’t tried the Dubai Metro for mid-day errands yet: air-conditioned, punctual, and way less draining than sitting in traffic with the AC on full blast.

What’s your go-to strategy for getting through the summer months here? Would love to know what works for you — especially if you’ve found any hidden cool spots!

This is such solid advice and honestly it takes most people at least one summer to figure it out the hard way.

The early morning thing is underrated. A 6:30am walk or run before the heat builds is genuinely pleasant, almost meditative. The city feels like it belongs to you for a bit.

A few things that help me:

The metro tip is spot on. Also, indoor souqs like the Gold and Spice Souq areas are surprisingly cool and way less crowded midday than the big malls.

Yas Mall and Mall of the Emirates are practically full cities at this point, so if you need to kill a few hours indoors there’s no shame in that.

Hydration is the obvious one but electrolytes make a real difference, not just water.

And honestly, leaning into the “summer in the UAE is slow season” mindset helps psychologically too. Fewer crowds, better restaurant deals, the city breathing a little.

What’s your favourite early morning spot? The Marina at sunrise is hard to beat.
