Best schools in Dubai: how we chose (a parent's honest guide, 2026)

When we moved to Dubai, picking a school felt like the most stressful decision of the whole move. There are 200+ schools and everyone has an opinion. Here’s what I actually learned, in case it helps another family.

Start with 3 questions, not the rankings

  1. Which curriculum? British, IB, American, Indian (CBSE/ICSE) or others. This is the biggest fork. If you might move countries again, IB travels well; British is the most common here.
  2. Which KHDA rating? KHDA (Dubai’s schools authority) inspects every school and rates it Outstanding to Very Good to Good to Acceptable. You can read every school’s full report free on the KHDA website. Honestly, this is the single most useful tool.
  3. What’s realistic for budget and location? Top schools run high and the good ones have waitlists.

The consistently top-rated (Outstanding) schools

These come up again and again as KHDA Outstanding:

British curriculum

  • GEMS Wellington International (Al Sufouh) - Outstanding every cycle since 2005
  • Kings’ School Al Barsha - long run of Outstanding
  • Dubai College (selective, not-for-profit, one of the oldest)
  • JESS (Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah)
  • Jumeirah College
  • Repton Dubai

IB curriculum

  • Dubai International Academy (first IB school in the UAE to get Outstanding)
  • GEMS Wellington (also offers IB into sixth form)

16 of Dubai’s 23 Outstanding-rated schools follow British or British-plus-IB.

Fees (roughly, 2025 to 2026)

  • Top Outstanding schools: ~AED 80,000 to 120,000 / year
  • There are excellent Very Good and Good schools for a lot less. Don’t assume you need the most expensive one: a Very Good school that fits your child can beat a stressful Outstanding one.

What I’d tell my past self

  • Apply early. The good ones fill up, especially FS1 and Year 7 entry points.
  • Visit in person. Ratings tell you a lot, but the feel matters.
  • Read the KHDA report, not just the marketing.
  • Factor the extras: registration, uniform, transport, books, they add up.

This is a parent’s experience, not official advice: always check current KHDA ratings and fees directly with the school, they change every year.

Now your turn: which school are your kids at, and would you choose it again? Drop it below, new families here will thank you.

This is such a solid guide, honestly wish something like this had existed when we first landed here!

One thing I’d add: the KHDA website (khda.gov.ae) lets you filter by curriculum, location and rating all at once, which saves a lot of tab-switching. The inspection reports are surprisingly readable too, not just a number but actual detail on what inspectors found.

A few things that caught us off guard:

  • Registration fees are often non-refundable, so confirm your visa situation before paying
  • Some schools have separate waiting lists for different year groups, so ask specifically about your child’s year
  • Transport costs can add AED 10,000 to 15,000 a year depending on distance

The point about “Very Good” schools is really underrated. Several families we know are genuinely happier there than at the more pressured Outstanding ones.

Which area of Dubai are you based in? Location honestly narrows the list fast.
